Arusha Gallery shows an ever-changing programme of exhibitions in its Edinburgh New Town space and associated galleries in the UK and abroad. Among the new works currently on show are paintings by Brighton-based Mark Johnston: working in natural light, Johnston paints his dreamy, powerful canvases with the aim of achieving an immediacy, looking as though the paint has just been laid down and still wet while the artist has stepped outside the room – and conjuring something primal rather than literal that has been left untouched by human presence. Invoking this idea of the raw purity that the world might show if humankind had not touched it, Sue Hubbard at the gallery describes the works as ‘maps of creative thinking executed in paint, rather than particular places or views.’
