The Manipulate Festival in Edinburgh presents visual theatre, puppetry and animated film to adult audiences, using primarily images rather than words to tell stories. Live performances include Before Thumbelina, with Anna Nekrassova in a fairytale for adults, playing the mother of Hans Christian Andersen’s digit-size heroine in a touching story about a struggle with infertility (The Studio, Festival Theatre, 7th and 8th Feb); and Love Beyond (Act of Remembrance), in which dementia-sufferer Harry forgets his ability to use sign language, leaving him in a world where he must confront the only thing remaining – himself (at the Traverse 10th – 11th Feb). The highly-visual ‘work-in progress’ performances Sand and Between Earth and Moon take place at Summerhall 9th Feb. A programme of workshops and talks accompanies the performances.
