Aberdeen Art Gallery’s 2024 exhibition programme kicks off with the only Scottish showing of work by the French-American artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010), widely recognised as one of the most influential figures in modern and contemporary art.
In a career which spanned most of the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, her endlessly inventive work, inspired by her memories and experiences, included monumental installations, sculptures, fabric collages and drawings. She is perhaps best-known for her large-scale spider sculptures such as Spider I, pictured below, including one she created for the opening of London’s Tate Modern in 2000.
Organised by Artist Rooms, a collection of international modern and contemporary art, this exhibition focuses on works produced during the last 20 years of Bourgeois’ life, a period of extraordinary creativity during which she re-examined many of her life-long concerns to create a new body of work exploring identity, gender, childhood, family and memory.
