Returning for its 14th year, this popular festival continues its trademark mix of classical music in beautiful and sometimes remote locations across East Lothian, including village churches and chapels and Haddington’s renowned St Mary’s Parish church, this year celebrating the 50th anniversary of its restoration, where the high-vaulting nave produces resonant and warm acoustics.

This year’s highlights include: Secret Byrd, an immersive performance by the vocal group Gesualdo 6 and instrumentalists Fretwork of some of composer William Byrd’s most celebrated music on the 400th anniversary of his death; a series of performances by the festival’s patron, pianist Steven Osborne, including a lecture performance delving deep into the music of Schubert; the Royal Northern Sinfonia with Polish violinist Maria Wloszczowska performing works by Beethoven and Schumann; the Kaleidoscope Chamber Cooperative with music ranging from Poulenc and Lefanu to Bacewicz and Coleridge-Taylor; and the boundary-breaking Iranian-American harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani. Festival favourites the Maxwell String Quartet (pictured), Scottish Opera and Dunedin Consort also return.

Scottish Opera’s ‘Daphne’, by Richard Strauss, is at St Mary’s Parish Church, Haddington on Thurs 7th Sept
