Antony Sher has been collecting stonking reviews for his towering portrayal of King Lear with the Royal Shakespeare Company over the last few months and now, thanks to the wonders of technology and innovative thinking, we Northern dwellers can finally check out what the fuss is about.
On the October 12 RSC broadcast their spirited production direct to cinemas across the country in a spectacular live offering that can somehow feel more immersive than sitting in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre itself. Since the cameras can catch close up detail of every face twitch and fleeting thought, it’s easier for us to see what’s going on behind the eyes of a fabulous actor than those in the back seats of the real thing.
The Cameo in Edinburgh and the GFT in Glasgow present their screenings on the October 12 while the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh follows up on Saturday October 22. But be warned, this is a 3 and a half hour show (with an interval break). It’s unedited – you get exactly what is seen on the night, not a ninety minute, Hollywood style offering. And what’s to not like? Shakespeare’s epic play produced by his finest proponents, starring a theatre legend in the lead role – beamed straight to your seat in Edinburgh or Glasgow. The only way they could make it easier is to act it out in your living room, and that would be pretty time consuming for all.
