Jolomo @ The Glasgow Gallery features over 30 new paintings of the popular artist John Lowrie Morrison’s favourite places, from the Mull of Kintyre to Benbecula, as well as some he has never painted before. Morrison has lived in Argyll for over 50 years. While he has painted many other landscapes as far afield as Venice and the Netherlands, he always comes back to Argyll to paint its crofts, hills, beaches and, of course, its legendary light.
The largest work in the show, Sunset, Carskiey Bay, Kintyre, captures the waves at the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre, reflecting the sunset colours of the sky. The painter says, ‘I’ve wanted to do this for ages and one day I just took a notion to do it. I worked on it for about a week. Doing the spray of the wave was at least a day’s work doing dot, dot, dot, dot.’ Jolomo’s expressionist landscapes in high-key colours have earned him a devoted following. One of Scotland’s best-selling artists, his paintings are in the collections of celebrities such as Sting, Madonna and Princess Anne.
