Describing her spiritual experience of two of Scotland’s most iconic islands, Ayrshire seascape artist Jenny Brown says, ‘Arran has majestically outlined my westward skyline my whole life, with many an idyllic childhood holiday spent on its shores and in its rock pools, while steeped in religious history, it is the deep, soul-settling peace and quiet remoteness of Iona that I feel as I paint. To me, it’s not just images, but feelings I hope to convey.’

Brown’s colour-rich style is exemplified by her use of pink and grey base layers, which are revealed with palette knife marks or left exposed. Shown in the historic thatched cottage which was once home to the shoemaker from Robert Burns’ Tam O’Shanter, Souter Johnnie, and now owned by the National Trust for Scotland, the collection invites the viewer to reflect on their own experiences of the wilder nature of Scottish island shores.
