John Byrne: Ceci n’est pas une rétrospective at the Fine Art Society in Edinburgh underscores his own assessment of himself as an ‘oddball’. Over the decades since his breakthrough exhibition at the Portal Gallery in London in 1966 under the pseudonym Patrick, Byrne has built up a kind of pictorial autobiography balanced between the macabre and the humorous, often casting himself as an outsider occupying his own slightly bizarre world. A true Renaissance man, he has also applied his prodigious talents to album cover design (The Beatles, Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty), song-writing (with his Paisley ‘buddy’, the late Gerry Rafferty) and musical theatre (Tutti Frutti, Your Cheatin’ Heart, and Underwood Lane, featured in Artmag.co.uk).
