Interwoven by Jenny Findlay and Susie Wilson
Upright Gallery, 3 Barclay Terrace, Edinburgh
Running from September 8 – 29
Private View: Thursday, September 7 from 6-8pm
Jenny Findlay is fascinated by printmaking and the applied arts and has spent most of her life developing and deepening her artwork in print. Initially her first interest was in design and textiles. However, this grew over time with an engagement in fine art printing such as relief, intaglio and screen printing. Her most recent work shows her expanding and applying techniques which have a strong sense of surface texture and rhythm, manipulating cloth into more three dimensional forms.
Susie Wilson examines the relationship between the hidden and the seen both metaphorically and physically. Through exploring the book form she has combined print, paint and collage in a sculptural way. The intimacy of holding the book, each page hiding then revealing the next, creates an atmosphere that is deeply personal. She is interested in this sense of revelation. Layers of translucent paper, stitched and cut into, obscure the forms and images creating a tension between the various areas reflecting the delicacy, fragility and subtlety of the subject.
