Artist Hannah Nijsten is mounting a new installation The Mirrored Cube at The Outernet in London – part of her Squares Cubed exhibition in which she aims to dissolve the boundaries between physical and digital art, reflecting on her experience of synaesthesia. Artmag.co.uk has featured this neurological condition in exhibitions before, such as Renee Rilexie’s installation at Edinburgh’s Dundas St Gallery in 2019, but this installation is the first of its kind at central London’s multi-media space The Outernet. In Hannah’s case, synaesthesia manifests itself by rendering her hyper-sensitive to light and high-frequency music.

The Mirrored Cube bridges the realms of digital and physical by centring on a large-scale (5m x 5m) mirrored cube in a dynamic and interactive environment: digital cubed balloons appear and descend on the venue’s 25-metre screens, triggering the launch of identical physical cubed balloons from a mirrored cube, which visitors are invited to interact with, making them part of the piece.

Hannah says, ‘This installation merges tangible and digital elements, through which I invite viewers to step into a world where sensory perception meets technology, weaved in a narrative exploring the affecting and phenomenal impact of synaesthesia. I hope it will deliver feelings and sensations, which strike a deep emotional chord and transmit the unique perspective that this entwining of senses provides.’
