The sparrow, the swallow and the mother of God – Incarnation and Creation is a new exhibition of icons, paintings and drawings by David Grossart, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh. A series of icons, paintings and drawings centring around a reimagining of the Annunciation as the ultimate love story, it focuses on Gabriel as ‘God’s messenger for the whole of creation, and Mary as a pro-active woman of nature within a participatory natural world.’
Building on traditional iconic imagery of Mary as Theotokos (the God bearer/mother of God) David has placed these divine mysteries alongside images of birds, insects and the horse (a metaphor of divine grace and strength), in the heart of a celebratory and abundant creation. He also incorporates his large-scale version of the icon of the Holy Trinity, called the ‘Hospitality of Creation’, in a visual hymn to the energy and wonder of God within creation, which now has a permanent home in the Cathedral.
The Cathedral supports a year-round programme of exhibitions, concerts and events alongside its services and classes.
