In 2022, Edinburgh’s Fruitmarket invited Cardiff-based Holly Davey to undertake a number of ‘controlled rummages’ in the archive with a view to making a new work. This was a part of the gallery’s 50th birthday celebrations which it is celebrating with a programme of Scottish, British and international art – for free, as it has been doing since 1974.
Davey is known for work which gives voice to the ‘silent’ part of archives, finding the creative potential in gaps and omissions. In the Fruitmarket archive, her attention was caught by Scottish Sculpture ‘75, an exhibition of the work of eleven men, ten of whom had studied at Edinburgh College of Art. Wondering which women might have been included in the exhibition, Davey made a chorus of women inhabit the gallery in a set-like installation of sculptures and invited the audience to move around and through it and consider the overlooked, to ‘re-see’ and ‘re-hear about’ women whose stories could and should be part of what we know.
