This year’s Hidden Door festival of music, art, dance, theatre and spoken word by emerging talent has taken over the former Royal High School building – one of Edinburgh’s most imposing buildings – which has lain empty and unused for over fifty years. A number of uses have been suggested for the building during this time, including the Scottish Parliament, a Scottish National Photography Centre and a luxury hotel, before a 2021 announcement that it will become the home of the National Centre for Music.
Many of the interlinking rooms as well as corridors and staircases are filled with art by recent graduates and established artists for a last hurrah before the building is redeveloped. Outside there are bars on the front terrace with sweeping views over to Holyrood and Arthur’s Seat.
