Some of Britain’s most important women artists working from the 1950s to the present day are featured in Ladies First: 70 years of Women’s Art at the Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries. They include nationally and internationally known names such as Laura Knight, Joan Eardley, Elizabeth Blackadder, Barbara Rae and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham as well local artists Chris Fergusson, Abigail McLellan and Silvana McLean. National art collections hold as little as 5% of work by women. The Gracefield Collection is better placed with 21%, while more needs to be done to redress the balance and representation. Exhibition curator Dawn Henderby will give a gallery talk at 2 pm on an opening day. Space is limited, so pre-booking is advised.
