Upright Gallery in Edinburgh’s new exhibition features Richard Goldsworthy, who celebrates the inherent beauty of the natural world, often using green wood and letting the piece change during the drying process. Through carving, sanding and burning, he manipulates the wood to produce striking contrasts, exposing and highlighting natural features.
For this exhibition, Goldsworthy is showcasing wall-based works in kiln-dried ash (see also Ash Rise exhibition at the city’s RBGE), which allows the grain to become the main focus without the distraction of splits found in green wood. For his new sculptural work, he has used darker woods such as oak and walnut to introduce a richer palette which, when charred and juxtaposed with pewter, emphasises the grain and creates a striking visual contrast.
