For the first time in Ayrshire, the Scottish Society of Botanical Artists’ 8th Annual Exhibition at the Maclaurin Art Gallery in Ayr includes affordable ‘mini paintings’ following the success of the idea last year. The exhibition, which is the Society’s largest yet, is a refreshing counterbalance to the prevailing idea of botanical art restrictive for detailed: while scientific illustration plays a part, there are floral portraits, plants painted in their native landscapes and imaginative compositions including pollinating insects and birds. The Society changes its venue yearly, moving around the country, affording more people the opportunity to enjoy the works in-person, and this is the first time it is exhibiting in Ayrshire – in the venerable, historic Maclaurin Galleries.
