Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow is showing 19 new paintings by Shetland-based artist Gail Harvey, in a testament to the beauty of the remote landscape where she works – run-through with mystery and uncertainty, and evoking a powerful and emotional response from the viewer. Gail’s aim is to replicate the energy and changing light, space and movement found in these coastal landscapes. She explains, ‘Living in Shetland I’m surrounded by a wide-open landscape with powerful weather. It’s also a place of the most beautifully delicate close-up surfaces. I run my paintings past all this and try to find space and flow. Paint marks always feel like a sense of physical touch placing the space.’
