To make an escape to Roulotte Retreat, the collection of romantic Romany caravans around a pretty lochan in a wildflower meadow near Melrose in the Borders, even more tasty, a Spring Foraging event has been arranged. It will be led by Mark Williams of Galloway Wild Foods on 5 April. Mark is Scotland’s only full-time foraging tutor, so he is well placed to lead the way in exploring the edible, useful and medicinal plants and fungi of the spring woods and hedgerows of the Borders. Afterwards it’s an al fresco cook-in of the finds from the two-mile walk.
Some other foody dates for the diary. The Wee Restaurant in North Queensferry is hosting a wine tasting evening with Philippe Larue from Fife wine merchant, L’art Du Vin, on Monday 17 March. Confit of Strathspey pork belly, pigs trotter, sweet potato puree and truffle cream is paired with a Languedoc Cuvee Classic, Moulin de Gassac – and the other pairings sound just as enticing. Wednesday 26 March is the date of the next monthly Dining Club at Bistro Moderne, Stockbridge. For energetic families the Kids Club at Galvin Brasserie de Luxe, at the Caledonian Hotel, has Sunday events on 30 March for Mothers Day and 20 April for Easter. And there’s craft activities and a gift for mum with lunch at Archerfield Walled Garden in East Lothian on 30 March.
