Bass Rock at Fidra Fine Art in Gullane features approximately thirty artists’ depictions of the prominent volcanic plug sitting off the East Lothian coast near North Berwick and is home to the world’s largest ‘single rock’ colony of northern gannets – the white sheen a result of their guano. Following previous artists and writers inspired by the rock (J M W Turner, Robert Louis Stevenson, and even Bruegel, who included it in his engraving The Fall of Icarus of 1560-65), the artists in the exhibition have created over 70 works which may show the rock in a new light even to local viewers who see it every day. And, by the way, Spanish for gannet is alcatraz).
