29th February – 29th March
Fidra Fine Art‘s forthcoming exhibition Take Five spotlights the work of five of the most colourful and popular artists working in Scotland today – George Birrell, Simon Laurie RSW RGI, John Kingsley DA RSW PAI, Stephen Mangan and Astrid Trügg.
Working mostly with oils and mixed media, George Birrell is inspired by the architecture of the coastal villages of the Scottish East coast. Fellow Glasgow School of Art graduate John Kingsley paints his abstracts and representational works with a similarly vibrant palette, evoking the landscapes of the south of France. Simon Laurie also studied at Glasgow School of Art, painting small abstract compilations of his experiences from the places he visits, in the spirit of the pioneering St Ives group. Duncan of Jordanstone graduate Stephen Mangan composes geometric structures in a bold, colourful palette with an unusual, eerie, quietness about their figures. Netherlands-born Astrid Trügg has taken her interest in architecture, shapes and contours of cityscapes and harbours to still lifes, attracted to everyday objects with simple distinctive shapes or textures, many of which reference the seaside close to her home in North Berwick.
