News of a food themed art exhibition reaches the Artmag Food and Travel Treats team from south of the Border. The Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle in Co Durham is one of those hidden gems of northern England and worth a visit in its own right, but when its next exhibition opens there’s the added bonus of an artistic look through at food and drink through five centuries. Feast Your Eyes: The Fashion of Food in Art, opens on 6 October and runs through into January.
The exhibition looks at how food is used to convey a story, or as a message, as symbolism or decoration. It considers the changing fashions in food and how these influenced artists’ depictions of food in their work. Make sure you time your visit to catch Bowes’s famous mesmerizing mechanical swan and have a leisurely lunch in its popular cafe.
