For a getaway with a difference, the Artmag Food team loves the idea of sleeping in a romantic Romany caravan close to a pretty lochan in a wildflower meadow. As an added attraction, Roulotte Retreat near Melrose in the Borders has confirmed a Creative Writing week starting on 15 June if you fancy adding relaxed learning to the roulotte experience. Roulotte Retreat’s other themed weekends will include a spring foraging and wild dining weekend, while co-owner Avril’s teaching skills are harnessed for yoga getaways. Close to the Tweed and Eildon Hills, the retreat makes the most of its tranquil environment and is popular with artists, writers and musicians who make creative use of the on-site studio. However, it is the artisan-crafted roulottes which are the true stars of this place. They have sumptuous elegant furnishings as well as all the “mod cons” you’ll need for a self-catering stay. Brought to the Borders over the past five years, each bespoke roulotte is different and has its own personality. There’s the oriental jewel Devanna with its peacock and paisley design or the Himalayan-style Shivanni with its carvings of ancient India on the wooden panels.
