The Barn Gallery – part of the Bield at Blackruthven Christian centre – is hosting an exhibition by painter Erica Robb.
Having graduated from the University of St Andrews, Erica followed a career in Law, before devoting herself to art. She is based in Edinburgh and has exhibited in Scotland, London and the English Midlands, where she grew up and learnt to paint. She visits Andaluçia in winter and spring to work on her art, and this exhibition, Seeking the Spirit, is the result, with work principally from Spain alongside a few pieces from Leith School of Art, where she was a student.
She says, ‘I find that materials create more beauty than I can achieve with a brush. My aim is to allow a painting to paint itself as much as possible. To achieve this, I intervene less and less with brushes, applying colour in layers, each layer retaining a visible presence in the final image. This slow layering of materials which may be hostile to each other ultimately yields coherence, reflects my understanding of the world, its contradictions, its ambiguities, the knowledge that what we see and believe to be one thing in fact comprises unseen interactions and constituents. It is the natural world rather than the man-made which compels me to paint.’
