The White Fox Gallery in Coldstream’s new exhibition is Embracing Form, a solo show running for five weeks featuring the work of wood designer Tom Cooper, who has enjoyed a long association with the Gallery and is acknowledged as one of the finest cabinet makers in Scotland. Having produced work for the Royal College of Surgeons, Dunfermline Abbey, Innis and Gunn brewery, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, and Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe’s daughter-in-law, Tom’s work is also known for its natural curves and forms, and some of the drawings that inspired these works are on display, executed on paper which he produced from his wood-shavings.

Virginie from the Gallery kindly sent us these pictures with notes about two of Tom’s works:

‘In keeping with the theme of his solo show, Embracing Form, Tom has given this coffee table a beautiful clean flowing line with the emphasis being placed on the two legs of the table sweeping through each other in a gentle curve and the leaf inlay detail on the top of the table being repeated as negative forms (cut-outs) on each leg. As always with Tom, the concept is stunning and his finish immaculate. Legs: pale rippled sycamore (a very rare type of sycamore) with burr elm inlay on the bases of the legs and in the cut-out shape. Top: Scottish elm (from The Meadows in Edinburgh) with rippled sycamore ‘leaf’ inlay detail.

‘This armchair has been based on an Art Deco style, but with a twist! It displays a lovely fluid line in the arm rest which starts from the beginning of one of the front legs, wraps around the back of the chair, (thus ‘embracing’ both the chair and the sitter) to continue on the other side, right down to the floor. Built in Scottish walnut (very rare and which displays a variety of tones as opposed to the American walnut which tends to be of a more solid dark hue) with lamination* for the arm rests/legs (composed of seven layers: three Scottish walnut, one sycamore, three Scottish walnut), upholstered in a luxury moons fabric (tweed). *Lamination facilitates the shaping/bending of the wood.
