Edinburgh’s Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) is holding a major exhibition celebrating the lives and work of Elizabeth Blackadder RSA RA (1931-2021) and John Houston RSA OBE (1930-2008) – two hugely influential Scottish artists.

Focusing on their travels, research and studio practices, A Journey Shared offers an insight into their shared fascinations, research interests and symbiotic practices, including works from across their careers, from early drawings and paintings to the masterworks of their mature periods.

Meeting while studying at Edinburgh College of Art, and married in 1956, they  shared several travels in continental Europe, and went on to travel Japan and the USA, producing an enormous quantity of work and amassing a large amount of objects for study.

The exhibition is marked by a new publication featuring writings by Alexander Moffat RSA, Stuart Duffin RSA and other Royal Scottish Academicians who worked alongside the couple.

The exhibition accompanies the recent RSA Blackadder Houston Bequest – a gift from the artists to the Academy, and artworks will be available for sale.
