The 13th edition of the Edinburgh Art Festival, the UK’s largest annual festival of visual art, this year comprises over 40 exhibitions in more than 30 museums, galleries and artist-run spaces across the city as well as a programme of pop-up exhibitions and events. Highlights include: an exhibitions celebrating 30 years of Inverleith House, featuring work by, among others, Louise Bourgeois;a showcase of over 100 drawings by Joseph Beuys at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, shown together for the first time; and solo shows by Barbara Rae at Open Eye Gallery and Kenny Hunter at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

A strong focus on portraiture includes an exhibition tracing the history of a self-portraits, from Rembrandt and Gustave Courbet to Marina Abramovic and Ai Weiwei, at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, while exhibitions on significant periods in art history include the 19th century French landscape painter Charles-François Daubigny and his relationship with Monet and Van Gogh at the Scottish National Gallery, Surrealist works from four private collections at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and an exhibition celebrating four centuries of The Art of the Garden at The Queen’s Gallery.
