Edinburgh Printmakers: Mouth of a Shark, Transparency

Angela Gilmore - Foreboding

19th October – 5th January 2020

Two new displays begin on 19th October at Edinburgh Printmakers:

Mouth of a Shark features artists from Edinburgh Printmakers and Cork Printmakers (Angela Gilmour, Fiona Kelly, David Lilburn and Anna York) who share reflections and responses to British-Somali poet Warsan Shire’s rousing poem*, exploring questions of what unites and divides us through their work.

New figures from UNHCR show a record 70.8 million displaced people in the world. Around 44,400 people leave their homes every day – driven to the unknown by the need to escape and drawn by hope for a better future, and this exhibition explores the concepts of home and displacement.

Transparency is a two-person exhibition from Glasgow-based artists Alberta Whittle and Hardeep Pandhal, commissioned by Edinburgh Printmakers and guest-curated by Mother Tongue. Spanning print, moving image, drawing and installation, it responds to the architectural heritage of the Castle Mills site – as a former silk factory, premises of the North British Rubber Company, and a brewery – now occupied by Edinburgh Printmakers. Based on the physical layers of the printmaking process and the buildings’ history, it considers the local built environment as a present-day testimony to Scotland’s colonial past.
