Penning Nostalgia – Memories of a Dundee Childhood is the name of the new exhibition at Eduardo Alessandro Studios in Broughty Ferry, featuring the detailed and distinctive biro artwork of Nicola McBride. Raised in Dundee, and a graduate of drawing and painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen in 1997, Nicola has exhibited in galleries across the UK and France. She works as head of the art department at Perth High School and discovered the possibilities of biro pen after raising a family and enjoying spare-time doodling, but with only limited space. Her mark-making is exacting, and the process painstaking with its unique constraints, such as the impossibility of erasing or correcting lines, and the restricted palette of eight colours plus black. Uddingston-based sweet-maker Thomas Tunnock, famous for its Teacakes and Caramel Wafers, adopted her last year as an official Tunnock’s merchandiser.
