Frances Walker, considered one of Scotland’s finest living artists, has donated a series of paintings to the city of Dundee based on her trip to the Antarctic Peninsula, South Shetlands, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands thanks to the James McBey Travel Award that she received from Aberdeen Art Gallery in 2007. Walk has painted a series of icescapes capturing the timeless beauty of rugged, remote places at the edges of civilisation. Entitled The Antarctic Suite, the works are included in the exhibition Charting New Waters: Recent Acquisitions to the City’s Permanent Collection at The McManus. A rare example of a living bequest, they represent the most significant donation by an artist to Dundee’s permanent fine art collection for over 25 years.
