Accompanied by his dog, a box of paints and a sketchbook, Duncan Shanks has explored the hills of South Lanarkshire in all weathers, where he has lived for over fifty years, recording its rivers, burns, fields, rocks and changing skies and climate. The wind, rain, snow and sleet have been as important to his work as the sun and the ever-shifting light. His latest exhibition, at Glasgow’s Roger Billcliffe Gallery, where he has exhibited since the mid-1980s, features some forty pictures, ranging from tiny sketches to two metre-square canvases.
