From its beginning in 1983, the Edinburgh International Book Festival has grown into a major annual Festival draw in the capital every August, attracting around 250,000 visits, and is claimed to be the largest public celebration of the written word in the world. Up until 2020 it was based at a fondly-remembered tented Festival village in Charlotte Square Gardens, but currently the action takes place mainly at the Edinburgh College of Art buildings at Lauriston, in the city’s Old Town.

Art, design and photography continue to be an enduring theme, this year with events such as artists Katie Holten and Katie Paterson* in dialogue about art and re-wilding; graphic artist Jeremy Deller (pictured above) discussing ‘open’ art projects; artist Lauren Elkin examining the representation of the female body • Brian Dillon discussing our attraction to certain imagery; artist David Shrigley in discussion with poet Michael Peterson, and book cover designer Jon Gray with Canongate Books’ Art Director Rafaela Romaya, among others.

*Katie has featured in at Ingleby Gallery Edinburgh, the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art, and at Margate’s Turner Contemporary.
