Islander: The Paintings of Donald Smith at Edinburgh’s City Art Centre features the Lewis-born artist’s intense, lyrical images of island fishermen and women, celebrating their indomitable spirit. Created in partnership with An Lanntair in Stornoway, this first major exhibition of his work shows how his painting acknowledged movements in Europe and America, but remained resolutely local in its subject matter.

Visitors to the City Art Centre can also see Bright Shadows: Scottish Art in the 1920s until 27th June, Marine: Ian Hamilton Finlay from 22nd May, and Charles H Mackie: Colour and Light until 10th October. There is also mini display, Joan Eardley (1921 – 1963), and various supporting talks and features online.
