Shaheen Unis, the entrepreneur behind Mrs Unis Spicy Foods was honoured by Queen Margaret University

Degree of distinction

Among the honorary degrees handed out by Scotland’s universities this summer, one caught our eye at the Artmag Cullinary Arts desk.

Shaheen Unis, the entrepreneur behind Mrs Unis Spicy Foods was honoured by Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. Saheen Unis is responsible for introducing the Scottish palate to handmade, halal Indian foods and her name is synonymous with the pakoras, bhajis, samosas and nan breads produced in Edinburgh.

She is probably best known for her vegetarian haggis samosa, which was launched in 2002, having been developed working with Queen Margaret students. She is also one of the founders of the Edinburgh Mela, which returns to Leith Links on 31 August and 1 Septmeber. Mrs Unis was presented with her Degree of Doctor of Business Administration, Honoris Causa by the university’s deputy principal, Professor Alan Gilloran.
