Photographer David Gordon‘s Fishing the Minch is part of the series Everything Flows – a coastal exhibition ‘trail’ programmed and specially-curated by Street Level Photoworks as part of the Year of Coasts and Waters 20/21. Joining skipper Donald MacDonald and his crew, David boarded a fishing boat based in Stornoway, Lewis – the Fiery Cross – and documented the crew trawling for their catch in The Minch – the strait of water between the Outer Hebrides and mainland Scotland. His photo’s were exhibited at the Half Moon Photography Workshop in London in 1980, and now, over forty years later, showing these historic images again gives the 2021 audience a glimpse of Stornoway’s industry and daily life during that period – now almost completely disappeared. A accompanying narration by Gordon evokes the rhythms of a bygone life whose voice can still be heard.
