Mayfesto, the Tron’s edgy min-fest of provocative work kicks off with a performance built around Electro sound pioneer and strident composer Daphne Oram.

Her instruments might have been oscillators and generators but Daphne was intently serious about discovering the resonances and vibrations which triggered human emotions and interaction. Studying waveforms and electronic pulses through tape loops, backward swipes and signal generators she collated whoops and buzzes into musical scales and in the process practically invented synthesised music. She even wrote symphonies to show off her discoveries.

Quite how you write and act and do theatre on this trailblazing artist’s philosophy must surely be the big challenge for Blood of the Young and if they capture Oram’s spirit it’s bound to be a vibrant, exciting and original show, especially for Dr Who fans in the audience – Oram invented and ran the BBC Radiophonic Workshop where that famous howling theme tune was produced.
