Collage at Fidra Fine Art in Gullane focuses on an art form with a history stretching back centuries. Demonstrating how artists can use collage in different ways – to assist and inform composition, add texture, create an artwork from a variety of objects such as magazine clippings, newspaper texts or found objects – eight artists, including comedian Phill Jupitus (currently in his third year at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee), have cut and pasted a selection of collectable pieces to showcase this fun, imaginative and thought-provoking medium. Says Jupitus, who favours overlaying 20th-century icons from Lulu to Chairman Mao, ‘The best thing about collage is the speed at which you can work with colour, form and narrative. Unexpected stories emerge as you construct a collage. It’s a compelling medium.’
