Citizens Theatre Glasgow
From February 8 – March 4
The second instalment of John Byrne’s much-loved Slab Boys trilogy picks up a few hours after the first play’s volatile finale in the slab room. It sees swaggering pals Phil and Spanky busting loose from the monotonous carpet factory and getting down and dirty at the annual staff dance.
A strong cast featuring brothers Ryan and Scott Fletcher, Sean Scanlon and Barbara Rafferty is directed by Caroline Paterson, known to TV soap fans as Ruth Fowler from EastEnders, and to Scottish theatre goers as a much lauded actor and director who has appeared in previous productions with Robert Carlyle and Alan Cumming.
Cuttin’ a Rug is a bit freer than the first outing as the characters get to let their hair down at the big bash. As always Byrne’s droll and affecting dialogue sprinkles fairy dust across the blighted lives of these defiant working-class heroes determined to make their stories matter. An era-defining work that still resonates.
Tickets: £12.50 – £22.50 | Preview £9.50
