Following-up his 3-month residency at Virgin Hotels Edinburgh (as featured in Artmag) Edinburgh-based Constantine.. the Artist has been busy putting together an exhibition representing the continuation of his Vigilante series of work, at Scot_ART’s Gallery 2 in the city’s St Margaret’s House.

The series has evolved significantly since his Virgin Hotels residency, with an additional installation piece featuring audio and photography from a performance-piece Constantine.. undertook prior to the exhibition’s opening, and a short film based on VIGILANTE Returns which is to be screened at the Pinewood Studio film festival later this year.

Athens-born, Constantine.. settled in Scotland to study Geology in Aberdeen, then to take up a career in painting before moving to Edinburgh, where he has been based for over a decade.

Now, under the banner The VIGILANTE Returns, the series is forming a solo exhibition running from 22nd July to 9th August.

The VIGILANTE series of paintings centres on a foul-mouthed anti-hero who, in between drinking and smoking, hurls abuse, dressed in a Batman costume – reminiscent of the Mr Hyde character by Edinburgh author Robert Louis Stevenson.

While the series has been applied in acrylics on paper, the new work is in oil-stick, often on special substrates such as metallic papers. First exhibited in 2023, the artist describes the series thus: ‘VIGILANTE explores our obsession with morality, the facades we wear, and the performances we give to be seen as “good.” The series plays with visual cues from mythology, pop culture, and philosophy to challenge viewers with difficult questions.’ Visitors may also spot references to combative guitar bands such as The Cramps.
