Clare Andrews: The Attraction of Opposites at The Gallery at Linlithgow Burgh Halls features a selection of oil paintings from the past ten years as well as more recent work. Andrews usually works simultaneously on a series of paintings on a common theme, with colours and visual elements resolving themselves in ever-differing ways. Exploring social and political issues, she uses a combination of abstraction and figuration, with large areas and shapes of flat colour interacting with realistic images and apparently unrelated subject matter. The resulting pictures may have some sort of narrative, but are left open-ended for the viewer to complete. Clare was born in Aberdeen and studied at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Hornsey College of Art in London and A Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Laje in Rio de Janeiro. She lives and works between her studios in Scotland and Brazil.
