Castle retreat for romance or relaxation

Shieldhill Castle Hotel

Just an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and Glasgow, near the market town of Biggar, there’s a baronial mansion set amid trees and parkland. Shieldhill Castle Hotel had sadly been left derelict for three years until new owners took on a major refurbishment to create a bold contemporary look, while retaining all original features, wood panelling, fireplaces and the old keep tower.

With a 16th century chapel and purpose-built marquee this is the perfect venue for a wedding. The 26 stunning bedrooms are lavish in design and colour, with four poster beds, gorgeous wallpapers, velvet and silk fabrics. The luxurious honeymoon suite has a double Jacuzzi bath. But you don’t have to get married to visit Shieldhill. The rural setting is just the place for a country break and dogs are welcome. Hike up Tinto hill, take woodland walks or try clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, ballooning or even a helicopter ride.

Hospitality is casual and homely. Sip a G&T in the Oak Room before sampling an excellent dinner from a concise but appetising menu. Smoked salmon, chicken liver parfait, Ayrshire pork, seabass, sweet potato and leek risotto, crème brulée and cheese are served in the elegant Chancellor restaurant. Alternatively, take a pub supper in the bar with its outdoor patio overlooking the garden. Warm and welcoming, it’s great news that Shieldhill has opened its doors again.
