Booking is already open for Art and Ornament at Dalkeith Palace – an exhibition celebrating the tercentenary of the Baroque master carver Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721). A collaboration between the Master Carvers Association and friends, the exhibition brings to life the legacy of Gibbons’ influence through works by over forty contemporary artists and makers from all over Britain. Some of the works are for sale.
Dalkeith Palace is a fitting setting for Art and Ornament. Anna, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch, commissioned Gibbons to create several stand-out features in the Palace when she was re-modelling what was then Dalkeith Castle, that she had inherited as a grand classical palace on a par with other European palaces of the time. Gibbons’ work includes an overmantel, Neptune Summoning Galatea, which will be on view during the exhibition.
