The Edinburgh International Film Festival returns for its 74th edition with a programme of in-theatre and digital screenings, including 31 new features and 73 shorts, 18 of them having their world premieres and three appearing outside their home country for the first time. The majority of the screenings take place at the Filmhouse, with the Opening Gala and Special Preview at the Festival Theatre and other screenings at partner venues across Scotland and through a dedicated streaming platform, Filmhouse at Home. The Festival opens with the European premiere of Michael Sarnoski’s Pig, featuring Nicolas Cage as a reclusive truffle-hunter, and closes with the UK premiere of Billy Crystal’s Here Today.

Two Scottish films explore island life: Prince of Muck, a documentary following the continuing battles of elderly patriarch Lawrence MacEwan as he struggles to accept he no longer controls his life or the island he loves; and the Hebridean drama The Road Dance, based on the book by STV presenter John MacKay, who also stars, about a young girl in a small village before the First World War, whose life changes drastically when a tragedy befalls her.
