The Scottish premiere of H-E-L-L-O by the American born filmmaker and multimedia artist Cauleen Smith opens the 2022 programme at Collective in Edinburgh. H-E-L-L-O translates the famous five-note musical motif from Stephen Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind into a greeting for sites around New Orleans, post-Hurricane Katrina. At each site musicians play the sequence on a variety of instruments such as trumpet, cello and bass saxophone. Their interpretations of the sequence, originally written by film composer John Williams as a coded extra-terrestrial ‘Hello’, speak mournfully of New Orleans’ enduring spirit. Cauleen Smith is best known for her experimental works which address the African-American identity, specifically the issues facing black women today.
