Settings – beaches and books at Burnside gallery & frames in Selkirk features two artists who have concentrated in the last year on their surroundings. Val Menon has focused on the sea along the east coast of Scotland between Edinburgh and Tyninghame with the aim of creating a strong visual memory in an area which had become a sanctuary for her between lockdowns. Val is a nationally-exhibited artist, including at the Royal Scottish Academy and Visual Arts Scotland. Helen Douglas’s artist books are held in public collections, including the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the V&A, Tate and New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Her most recent book, Setting, was made during the spring and early summer lockdown of 2020. She explains: ‘I looked up. My focus became the birds in my garden, in the trees, in the sky and all that settled within and flew overhead. Following the swallows led me out into the field by the mill, open to the sky.’
