Macdonald Marine Hotel, North Berwick

Brasserie puts North Berwick on the map

John Paul at the Marine at the Macdonald Marine Hotel, North Berwick has stunning seaviews over the golf course, beaches and the islands of the Forth. Launched in the summer, it has just been voted runner-up in the best hotel restaurant category at the East Lothian Food and Drink Awards.

Chef John Paul McLaughlin is renowned for contemporary Scottish cuisine. The grand dining room with wood panelling, claret red walls and portrait paintings has a romantic mood. The extensive winter menu is divided into Starters, Classics, Grills, Scottish wild fish and Vegetarian, the fresh seasonal food sourced from Scottish farms, lochs and sea. Start with lobster and salmon ravioli or haggis, neeps and tatties. Steaks are always popular – especially after an energetic 18 holes of golf – with selection of sirloin, rib-eye and thick fillets, served with mushrooms, tomato and hand cut chips. This is the game season and here you can sample braised pheasant coq au vin and for fish lovers, organic sea trout with prawns and saffron potatoes. For pudding apple and rhubarb crumble or chocolate fondant, as well as farmhouse cheese.

John Paul at the Marine is now firmly on the map as a destination brasserie; this is not just a hotel restaurant and warmly welcomes North Berwick’s residents, day visitors, golfers, couples and families. The Macdonald Marine hotel with its excellent spa, thermal suite and swimming pool, is perfect for a relaxing winter break at the seaside. Call in for coffee, drinks and afternoon tea in the comfy lounge with seaviews. For a private dinner party you can book the library for a birthday celebration or a festive gathering with friends.
