In Tollcross, Edinburgh, Detail Framing & Gallery is hosting a new exhibition by Rowena Comrie. Having worked as a professional artist for thirty years, Rowena is based at Glasgow’s Gallowgate Studios, after moving from Aberdeen in 2010. Originally from Essex, she graduated from Reading University, where she embraced expressionist ‘colourfield’ painting, which she continues to develop. She says, ‘I make these works from a specific aesthetic point that personally expresses sublime elements of human experiences. Over many years I have refined and developed my technique, a process that continues to challenge and intrigue.’
Rowena also works figuratively and sculpturally, producing work over the past five years that develops the concept of the sublime, using flight as her subject – a contemporary extension of the 18th-century idea of the sublime, with flight as a metaphor for transcending the limits of the human condition.
