Showcasing two artists who are linked by their interest in sculptural shape and line, Jessie Ann Matthew & Jonathan Gibbs: Quiet Water at Burnside Gallery in Selkirk features paintings and wood engravings inspired by the East Lothian landscape.
A photographer, textile artist and painter, Jessie is showing a series of paintings of the Keith Water, where she and her family spent time during lockdown. She says, ‘Beside the river was a pocket of quiet and a place of restoration. I would take my watercolours and try to capture the peacefulness of the surroundings.’
In his wood engravings and paintings Jonathan uses recurring icons or emblems and shifting shapes balanced by harmonic lines, saying, ‘Graphic art, design, fine art and illustration all happily co-exist in my work.’ An illustrator and art college lecturer all his working life, he has shown in many Edinburgh and London galleries.
