There is a double-bill of exhibitions coming up at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries. Claude Cahun: Beneath This Mask features work by the French surrealist photographer best known for her enigmatic and playful self-portraits. Decades ahead of her time (her work is echoed in Cindy Sherman’s self-portraiture in differing guises), Cahun (1894- 1954) toyed with perceived gender roles and identity, concerns as current and pertinent as ever in today’s world. Born Lucy Renee Mathilde Schwob, she adopted the pseudonym by which she is known, saying, ‘Masculine? Feminine? It depends on the situation. Neuter is the only gender that always suits me.’

Also showing, until 1st October, is Kirsty Lorenz: Recipe for a Miracle, featuring a new body of paintings inspired by old healing plant recipes and remedies and touching on themes of spirituality, the natural world, well-being and mindfulness. Until 17th September there is an additional exhibition showing the work of Haugh of Urr-based artist Jane Howe, who died in 2020 and is remembered for her work with Spring Fling Open Studio weekends, Dumfries and Galloway Fine Art Society and the Yellow Door art collective. The work on display will be available to buy, with profits going to Marie Curie cancer care.
