A busy end of year at the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) in Edinburgh:

The RSA’s Christmas Show, which continues until 22nd Dec, features over a hundred works by Royal Scottish Academicians, many at low prices, making the exhibition an ideal place to look for something special by the country’s finest artists, to add to someone’s art collection – or your own. A Christmas Choir Concert will take place on 9th Dec, featuring carols by Pitchcraft – an Edinburgh-based choir known for its unique a capella arrangements. Wine and mince pies will be served, in the setting of the Christmas Show, will make for a lovely night of festive music.

Known for his sculpture, Gareth Fisher PRSA (whose work is pictured) was recently elected President of the Academy, and his own exhibition of fluid and precise watercolours, The Alessandria Series, shows him exploring his interest in the natural sciences and constructed environments.

The Academy has issued its call for entries to its Annual Exhibition – the most extensive annual display of contemporary art and architecture in Scotland, and a mainstay of the country’s art and cultural scene. This, almost unbelievably, will be its 197th, and as usual will feature Scottish art and architecture alongside international artists, with topical or political elements uncensored, helping to give an independent voice to artists.

A National Galleries of Scotland exhibition, Rembrandt to Rego: The Printmaker’s Art, on until 25th Feb, showcases the pioneers of printmaking, one of the most accessible art forms, who have made their mark in the last 500 years. From Albrecht Dürer in the 15th century to contemporary artists such as Tracey Emin and Chris Ofili, artists have pushed the boundaries in both subjects and techniques, including screenprinting, etching and engraving. Other featured artists include Andy Warhol, William Blake, Rembrandt, Goya, Elizabeth Blackadder, Paula Rego, Bridget Riley and Pablo Picasso.
