Anna Somerville’s fourth solo exhibition with Edinburgh’s &GalleryReminiscence, sees the artist move away from oil paint to a variety of materials including spray paint, inks, bleach, acrylic and raw pigment, layering mixed media with added and subtracted paintwork and resulting in a strong sense of depth, and echoing nature’s accumulation and submergence on the landscape in real life. Anna was inspired by dramatic landscapes on a recent trip to Gairloch in the Highlands, and has endeavoured to create an impression of the landscape in a sense of place and feeling through textures, colours, shapes and movement.

The exhibition is accompanied by a new selection of work by Dutch artist Anke Roder, who is inspired by the seascapes and plantlife of the northern Holland; her encaustic* seascapes are described as ‘sensuous satin slabs anchored along a welded horizon, oozing light’. *An ancient beeswax-and-pigment technique where colours are burnt-in.
